According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, states are having a positive impact in reducing the over-prescribing of opioid painkillers.
Take a look at the following graphic depicting results obtained by passing legislation in the following states:
How are states accomplishing these results?
One way is the tightening of control over pain clinics prescribing the drugs and implementing prescription drug monitoring programs that track painkiller prescriptions, such as I-STOP in New York State. Overall, states that are taking action are seeing a reduction in overdose deaths and also “doctor shopping” has decreased as well.
Every little bit helps and you can make a difference.
Did you know that the I-Stop legislation was started by Save the Michaels of the World, which kickstarted the Painkillers Kill awareness campaign? Letters and emails were sent to state senators and assemblymen to encourage them to support the Michael David Israel Laws and the I-Stop Legislation, the internet system which tracks over prescribing controlled substances. The team also worked with Governor Mario Cuomo and NYS Attorney General Eric Schniederman to help achieve their goal.
After many trips and meetings in our state capital the I-Stop Bill gained support and momentum. On June 11, 2012 this legislation passed unanimously in both houses. Our success was due to the determination of Avi Israel and others who would not take no for an answer.
