Prevention tip of the week: Use, don’t abuse

Narcotics such as painkillers, depressants, or stimulants can be prescribed as part of a treatment plan after surgery. However, unlike antibiotics, most prescriptions for pain management don’t require them to be taken consistently for the patient to recover.

Utilizing OTC medications like Tylenol and Motrin to reduce inflammation, soreness etc. can greatly reduce the potential for improper use and abuse of prescription medication. Promptly dispose of unused prescription medications to prevent temptation toward addiction or abuse.

Educate yourself on the side effects of prescription medications before you begin taking them. Speak to your pharmacist or care provider immediately if you suspect an issue with any medications you’ve been instructed to take.
